With Steely Dan frontman Donald Fagen recently hospitalized, the band has dropped off of the Eagles’ recent tour dates. Now, several Eagles crew members have tested positive for COVID.
Steely Dan frontman Donald Fagen was hospitalized, leading the band to cancel their appearance as the opening act for the Eagles at two concerts at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis this week — following a pair of shows in Denver last week.
On Monday (October 9), at the first of the two Indianapolis shows, Don Henley broke the news to the crowd and thanked Steve Miller for filling in at the last minute. The Steve Miller Band will continue to provide support for the Eagles at upcoming shows in Detroit and Cleveland. Last week in Denver, Sheryl Crow stepped in for Steely Dan for two shows on October 5 and 6, when Fagen was forced to cancel — now revealed to result from illness.
While the nature of his illness remains unknown to the public, five members of the Eagles’ touring crew recently tested positive for COVID — which may be what’s been ailing Donald Fagen. Fortunately, Fagen (pictured with the Doobie Brothers) is out of the hospital as of Tuesday (October 10). The band plans to rejoin the Eagles’ farewell tour next month, starting with a show in Atlanta on November 2.
“The show must go on,” Don Henley told the sold-out crowd in Indianapolis. Henley is a fan of Gainbridge Fieldhouse; the band has played countless arena shows in similar venues, but Henley calls the Fieldhouse “one of the best-sounding rooms.”
“I don’t know why. This place actually has good acoustics.”
After Steely Dan hopefully rejoins them in November, the Eagles’ farewell tour will continue across North Carolina, Kentucky, and Minnesota, with a couple gigs in Los Angeles scheduled for January next year.
